Goals and Objectives

Goals and Objectives of NUCBTR

  • The National University Complex for Biomedical and Translational Research (NUCBTR) is a distributed infrastructure organized as a network of resources (biobank, scientific and technical equipment and research units) of the two largest medical universities in Bulgaria: Medical University-Sofia (MU-Sofia) and Medical University - Plovdiv (MU-Plovdiv).

  • The strategic network covers infrastructures for fundamental and applied biomedical research from MU-Sofia and MU-Plovdiv, as well as a number of associated partners - hospitals and centers. In parallel, the infrastructure includes some of the largest biobanks for genetic and tissue material in the country. Through the biobank of the Molecular Medicine Center (MMC) MU-Sofia is a member of the European Research Infrastructure for Biobanking BBMRI-ERIC (Biobanking and BioMolecular Resources Research Infrastructure - European Research Infrastructure Consortium).

  • The role of NUCBTR is to connect the existing resources, achieving critical mass of expertise and technological capabilities. Furthermore, to create conditions for the development of research in the field of molecular medicine, "omix" technologies and translational medicine in Bulgaria in the post-genomic era, providing access to biological materials, state-of-the-art technology and expert assistance of scientists and research organizations.

  • The long-term vision for the development of the scientific infrastructure is to establish itself as a national Center of Excellence in Biomedical Research and Translational Medicine, which will accelerate the transition between basic research and clinical practice in order to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the most important for society diseases.

01.
Development of BBMRI.bg - national hub and development of a network of biobanks

for storage of biological materials and clinical data, opportunities for standardization, certification and quality control, in accordance with European and national legislation for personal data protection and ethical norms related to the use of biological materials for research.

02.
Improving the level of biomedical sciences by expanding, maintaining and providing access to modern biobanking infrastructure,

omics technologies, cell and tissue cultivation, molecular and microbiology technologies, laboratorial and functional research in in vivo and in vitro model systems, processing and storage of large data sets; stimulating participation in innovative projects at national and international level and of high scientific achievements.

03.
Improving the quality of training of medical specialists of the future

in two of the main institutions in medical education and research in Bulgaria, MU-Sofia and MU-Plovdiv, by creating new educational programs, providing opportunities for additional training of young scientists, ensuring career development of qualified specialists.

04.
Establishment of collaborations for exchange of knowledge and transfer of scientific results and achievements in practice

by creating a common framework for inter-institutional and interdisciplinary collaborations, as well as for stimulating translational research with other research centers and institutes in the field of biomedical research and associated partners in the field of healthcare.

05.
Solving important problems in the field of healthcare

stimulating translational biomedical research in order to improve the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of socially significant diseases, such as oncological, cardiovascular, neuropsychiatric, metabolic, infectious and rare genetic diseases.

06.
Development of intelligent technologies in the field of "healthy lifestyle and biotechnology" industries,

with a focus on precision and personalized medicine, biomarkers and the development of new drugs.

07.
Promoting knowledge transfer and innovation

by establishing public-private partnerships with businesses based on the provision of services in the field of biomedical research and omics technologies; development of spin-off companies based on innovation, with an undoubted social and economic effect and attracting partners and clients from regional and European research and health organizations.

08.
Increasing the competitiveness of the Bulgarian science

by promoting and facilitating access to national resources of biological materials and specific infrastructure, improving the quality of scientific production and integration of Bulgarian research teams in the European scientific space.

09.
Integration of NUCBTR in the European research infrastructures in the field of biomedicine such as EATRIS

(European Advanced Translational Research InfraStructure), ECRIN - European Clinical Research Infrastructure and Euro-BioImaging - European Research Infrastructure for Imaging Technologies in Biological and Biomedical Sciences, etc.
